If you have a question for our experts feel free to post it here on our Facebook page and our co-founders Dr. Jeanne Wilson and Haylie Pomroy will answer you! Today’s topic: vitamins, specifically when and how to take them.
Q: As I was taking all of my vitamins this morning I was wondering…. is it safe to take all of my vitamins at one time? And if not, where can I find information on how to take them properly? I was also curious if there might even be some foods to avoid when taking them with a meal, or some that should be taken without a meal?
A: We always suggest that you space out your vitamin’s throughout the day for maximum absorption and effectiveness.
You need to remember that some vitamins are fat-soluble (dissolve in fat) and some vitamins are water-soluble (dissolve in water). If you take water soluble vitamins all at once you will lose the effectiveness of some of them and end up “losing” most of them in the toilet! If you have a sensitive stomach, you should take them with your meal. So it depends upon what kind of vitamins you are taking, how sensitive your stomach is and your daily schedule. A good rule of thumb is to space them out, take with your meals if possible or as your schedule allows.
A visit to a good medical practitioner well versed in vitamin therapy is always helpful. They can be aware of your physical issues and prescribe your vitamins accordingly. Also they can go through everything you have in your medicine cabinet and check for duplication, expiration, dosage and get it down to what is essential for you!

I need to start doing this. It always feels excessive when I take six vitamins at once!
