Girl Scout Cookies: Dos & Don’ts

I don’t know about you, but as a former Brownie and Girl Scout I simply can’t resist those cookie sales. After all, it is for a good cause! (Not to mention, there are a few of those cookies my taste buds also can’t resist!) This is the time of year when the troops go door-to-door and descend upon grocery store parking lots to sell those famous cookies. I often buy a few boxes and treat myself to a cookie or two, then immediately bring the rest into my office rather than keep them at home where I know I will just continue snacking away. It’s a win-win: I support the Girl Scouts and score some points with my co-workers!

If you are like me and can’t say no, here is a quick look at the best and the worst (health-wise) cookies the Girl Scouts have to offer: Read More »

Strange Productivity Boosters

Do you prefer to work in a quiet, calm setting? Do you enjoy silence or white noise instead of music or the chattering of co-workers? Well if so, you may not be as productive as you think!

According to recent German research, clutter helps people focus. The study—which tested how efficiently people completed tasks like categorizing items in both messy and clean environments—found that chaos helped people simplify the tasks at hand.

DIY Chips

Potato chips seem so foreign, I can’t even remember the last time I ate any. All that grease and trans-fat… ugh! We have shared with you Haylie Pomroy‘s delicious recipe for Kale Chips, and we are also big fans of other veggie and fruit chips. They make a handy snack, and are healthy and delicious.

A great way to make a slew of DIY, at-home fruit and veggie chips is with the TopChips Chip Maker, aka my new best friend. I have used this everyday since I bought it! I love being able to make my own homemade, fat-free, oil-free, and guilt free crispy fruit and vegetable chips in just 3 to 5 minutes. The set includes the cooking tray, and a mandolin slicer to get that perfectly thin, chip-like slice.

These have become our go-to after school snacks, and my kids love helping to make them (I handle the slicing, of course!). The TopChips Chip Maker can be used with potatoes, carrots, beetroot, and fruit, and includes a cooking chart.

All About the Pretox

We often have clients calling in to tell us they are headed on a big vacation, family reunion, or week-long business trip and know they won’t be on their best behavior, diet and exercise-wise. In order to prepare in advance for this week of gluttony they order an Optimal Cleanse program so they can get started on their detox immediately upon their return.

While we can all benefit from a detox program, not just as a result of diet but also the environment around us, and should follow the Optimal Cleanse program four times a year to maintain total health and wellness, we also provide another suggestion to these clients: why not try a pretox before you head off, and enjoy your break from reality, guilt-free!

Here are East West Essentials‘ co-founder Haylie Pomroy’s tips for a successful pretox:

Fat-Burning Foods

It’s true: Certain foods have a very high thermogenic effect, so you literally scorch calories as you chew. Other eats contain nutrients and compounds that stoke your metabolic fire. Feed your metabolism with these.

Whole grains

Your body burns twice as many calories breaking down whole foods (especially those rich in fiber such as oatmeal and brown rice) than processed foods.

Green tea

Drinking four cups of green tea a day helped people shed more than six pounds in eight weeks, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reports. Credit EGCG, a compound in the brew that temporarily speeds metabolism after sipping it. To up your intake, keep a jug of iced tea in the fridge.

Reasons to Drink More Water!

Feeling cranky, fatigued and unable to focus? You might just need a drink of water, according to new research.

The small study, published in the Journal of Nutrition, tested mood, concentration and mental skills in 25 women who either were given enough fluids to remain optimally hydrated or were induced into a mildly dehydrated state. Dehydration was achieved through either exercise alone or by using both exercise and a diuretic drug that increased urination.

The women’s mood and cognitive abilities Read More »

Haylie’s January Detox Tips

It is hard to believe we are almost at the end of January! I am still helping many clients “detox” from the holidays and prepare for the new year ahead.  The past few months have been a challenging time of year for our diet for many reasons. During the holidays we not only indulge in food & drink more than usual, we also eat foods that are higher in fats and sugar. This can commonly cause bloating and swelling of the abdomen, weight gain, fatigue, dull skin, and slow down our system for months to come. Here are the top tips I share with my clients for a January detox plan to lead to the most successful year ahead:

–Incorporate a pharmaceutical grade probiotic into your routine of vitamins and supplements. My favorite is the Optimal GI from East West Essentials. They come in easy individual packets. I take them every day and always throw them in my purse for convenience. These healthy gut bugs can help reduce bloating and swelling, food hangovers and dark circles!

–Drink tea. I have my clients drink these two teas:

Parsley Tea Recipe: Parsley is very rich in Potassium. This tea recipe is designed to help you keep your electrolytes balanced and get rid of the water weight most of us get from holiday indulgences. The tea helps the body regulate hydration, and delivers a natural form of potassium that helps with edema, water weight gain and puffiness that can occur with eating salty, fatty foods. Simply boil parsley and water. Strain and add Stevia if desired to taste.

Belly Fat Tea: This is a great tea for bloat! Helps burn Read More »
